I am sorry to hear that you don't like the way you sound. An accent is usually a bit of heritage, stemming from where you were born or grew up or lived for a long time. If people make fun of you, that is their weakness, not yours.

Still, if you really want to change it, you can seek speech counseling. I don't know where you live, or I might be able to suggest a resource, but surely you can find someone nearby who can help train you to speak differently. You could check with clinics or hospitals or physicians in your area, and someone would be able to refer you to a speech therapist or trainer. If you live near a big city with a theater group, you might be able to find speech training there. Changing your whole manner of speech will be very difficult and very hard work, but if you really want to do that, it is possible. I personally would not do it. I live in the Midwest (northern Wisconsin) and would surely seem to have an accent if I moved to, say, Mississippi or Zimbabwe or Australia or Vermont or Ireland....

But if I had that accent, it would be just fine. Yes, some people would probably tease me about it, but I would not let it bother me. As said, that would be their weakness, not mine.

Please don't let the ignorant, insensitive people make you feel ashamed of your fine heritage. Just be a good person, and it will all even out. One kind of bold thing you could try--I have seen it done a few times in similar circumstances--would be to make a speech or brief presentation before the students and teachers at perhaps a pep rally or other gathering. It doesn't work for everyone, but as noted, it has worked. The idea was to state your case in a friendly manner, even making light of the situation.

Well, whatever you decide, I wish you the best.

ADDED: I just read Natsuko's answer. It is a great answer. How can i change my african accent?
First of all, what is your native language(s) and in what language(s) are you speaking now that people are laughing at you?

Don't mind rude people.

First, you need to realize that your accent isn't bad.

It's just that ppl are ignorant and aren't used to hearing you.

But in case you're in an English-speaking area in the United States or Canada, I highly recommend you to purchase the 2nd edition (the latest edition) of the book ';American Accent Training'; by Ann Cook which comes with 5 audio CDs, a small mirror and three transluscent markers - all inside a package.

Visit www.AmericanAccent.com for more information.
i use to suffer same thing.

i have japanese accent and people use to think it so hilarious, but now everyone just use to it.

so i think people just have to get use to it.

i don't know precisely how you can change it.

i know when you are in chatroom or something you can maybe get program to make your voice sound different, but don't know where you can find that.

i personally though like african accent.

sorry i did not give answer you want but in the end of the day you just have to be comfortable with yourself because always there will be someone there to try to bring you down.

long time ago i learnt i cannot let people do that to me.

probably sounding lame to you but i think laughing at accents is pretty immature. especially if you are in america.

pretty diverse here, so should be normal thing by now.

anyway guess you would want to google programs to change your voice and probably take some sort of speech class that has to do with speaking with different accents. usually learning accents is something from acting classes so maybe take acting class...
